Design Crush: The Bone Season
Like any good bookworm, I love going into bookstores.
I love being surrounded by stories. I love the look of books, stacked high on shelves, spines straight and bright. I especially love when a series of books looks good together. Not just because they have the same artist or publishing team behind them, but because they were packaged with an eye for design, and with the heart of the stories in mind.
The Bone Season series does an especially fantastic job of this. The clock-hands motif of the first cover is present behind the dust jacket of each hardcover book, the symbols on each cover match information given in the prior story that carries through in the visuals described in the next novel, the colors and pastiche are beautifully complimentary, and the gold lines running through each directly reference a golden string in the story that represents the bond of the main characters throughout. There will be seven books in this series, and I cannot wait to see the set completed- and find out how the story ends!
I would love to have the opportunity to design for a publishing house or independent author at some point. Book design is near and dear to my heart, and I hope to do even half as impressive of a job as the designers of these gorgeous novels have.
